The latest release from Pligg v1.0 came with a lot of promise. New features, a new admin panel and what was belived to be a more stable version. This sadly is not the case.

While the latest version is on the right track, it should NOT be available for download unless it is for testing only. But if you go to the homepage of Pligg and click the download button, it’s what you get. This is only hurting Pligg as it is making members more frustrated and upset because this release has no business being the default download.

I’m not going to get into reviewing this release because I already did that back on February 19th with my post Pligg v1.0 RC1 Review, this post is to alert new members of Pligg that using the download provided by the Pligg developers is a waste of time.

I cannot put my finger on what happened in this version to make it a disaster, perhaps they spent too much time on the admin panel, which works, or the template, which is awful, or maybe it was the Groups addition, which seems to be one of the only working parts of this release.

When I reviewed this release I said that it was commendable that they were able to create the Group feature, and I still feel this way, though not many Pligg installs need it or should use it unless you have a great traffic base. While it was asked for in the forums, it came at the price of a now worthless CMS.

Anyone who downloads the latest version or upgrades to it, will be sorry as it will result in headaches and a lot of fist pounding.

For the sake of the project, I plea to the developers to make the default download from the homepage, download the 9.9.5 version and work on the kinks and errors with this release before telling new members to download it. But for some reason I do not see this happening.

We will NOT be releasing any templates for the 1.0 version as it only encourages people to upgrade or download it. Instead, we will start releasing templates for the 9.9.5 version to encourage people to stick with v9.9.5 until the developers have all the kinks worked out of v1.0.

This brings me to my next point, the developers. I will say this again, I love the CMS but have issues with the developers. Period. About a year and a half ago I was banned from the Pligg forums and rightfully so. However, I recently decided that I would attempt to have my member name (Geoserv) reinstated. I emailed the admin team asking for a truce and for the reinstatement, a week later no reply.

I summized they are probably busy working the errors with this releases, but then I also realized that I was getting responses from none other than chuckroast when he was receiving emails asking for assistance with modules from the module store that I had purchased to see what I would get and to see what support I would get on.

If you give them money, they will come!

Want the developers attention, give them money, they will reply almost immediately. But if you submit a general question, good luck getting help. Chuckroast will reply in the forums, but it will almost always be a smart remark or a remark only an egotistical !@#hole will give or it will be as useless as the current version is.

I did all of this as a test to see where their real attention lies, it’s on their worthless modules that they are trying to pawn off on you to get your money to support a version that is worthless.

Again, they are only interested in making money with worthless modules and not developing the CMS.

I listed a couple of these modules here and told you how to get the same thing for free. That shows that I am interested in only one thing, making Pligg users happy, not profiting from it. I will be exposing more modules soon as well.

Again, I am not bashing the project, anything open source I am on board with, but for all Pligg users you need to be concerned. If the developers, 2 at present, continue on this current path it will certainly mean the end of this CMS. People will not support a script that is flawed and only interested in ripping you off.

Pligg’s head developer and the only one with a brain, Ashdigg, left the project and started his own at Social Web CMS, and most likely because he saw this crap coming. Now, do I suggest you drop Pligg for Social Web CMS, no. But I encouage you to look at the past and what Pligg was back when Ashdigg was there. It was a much better run script that didn’t focus on ripping you off, instead it focused on actually coding a script and helping members, you know the members who helped Pligg get to where it is now.

Without people like Ashdigg, LincolnHawks, davemackey and myself, Pligg wouldn’t have some of the things it has today. But they don’t see that, they simply see us as enemies, too bad sice we are some of the few actually working to help it.

Thats my rant.

Now, for those of you looking to download the v9.9.5 version or to revert back, I have attached it below, it is the original 9.9.5 version, I recommend you use it until v1.0 gets a lot more work done to it.

There is no shortage of places to submit your design work or tutorials. I’m talking about web design, graphics design, font design, poster design etc… These types of submissions in my opinion don’t seem to fare so well on the good old faithfuls like Digg or Mixx as they are geared toward a certain demographic, fellow designers.

So what are the options? Let’s look at 3 of them now.

Design Bump:

In their words:

DesignBump is a social media site dedicated to the design community. DesignBump’s homepage is made up from the most popular user submitted links as decided by the site’s community.

Design Bump is quite possible one of the best resources for design inspiration, tutorials and examples. While not the most eye appealing site, it’s submissions are top quality and definitely worth submitting to.

Design Float:

One of the first sites of this kind is Design Float. Upon launch it managed to get it’s icon and banner on almost all major blogs and sky rocketed to a high PageRank of 6 and the support of major bloggers. When it launched I frequented the site daily.

In their words:

Design Float is a social media site dedicated to the design industry.

While they do have support of major bloggers Design Float is far from dedicated. They do have by far one of the best designs in this niche and have incorporated a blog. If you are looking for a design tutorial this is a good starting spot, however, be prepared to wade through page upon page of spam and submissions that have nothing to do with design.

The owners have so much as abandoned the project and it shows. An announcement bar tells the tale right away when they wish you happy holidays, looking past that, the enormous amount of spam turns you off. Visit their blog and you see it hasn’t been updated since November 24, 2008.

Why is it so popular? It’s high PageRank and it is a DoFollow, period. While I hate to say it because I do not like to support a site that the owners themselvescan’t support, I would submit to it.

FAQ PAL:

The newbie of the three and admittedly my own. FAQ PAL set out to be a large database of tutorials for designers, coders and surfers. However, the majority of our submissions are design related.

In their words:

FAQ PAL is a website to find and submit tutorials for webmasters, developers, coders and surfers.

FAQ PAL does have a good design, and has also incorporated a blog. You will find zero spam and no submission that isn’t related to the site’s niche.

FAQ PAL is a relatively new site, with a PageRank of 2 and is also a DoFollow site. The site does lack support of big bloggers as it hasn’t spent the money to advertise.

If your looking for a bump in traffic, this probably isn’t the best place to submit right now, but the DoFollow tag does make it worth your while.

Conclusion:

If you are in this niche, submit to all three, but would rate Design Float in the basement as I cannot in my heart support a site that has turned it’s back on it’s supporters from day one and has allowed such a great resource to be polluted with spam.

Whether you use any of these or not, keep designing and creating those tutorials as your help and work benefits many greatly.

Which of these do you or have you used?

Well after a long year of developers telling us the release of Pligg 1.0 was coming, we finally now have a release candidate and hopefully a final product soon.

So, what can you expect with the new release? Probably not what most users were asking for.

Categories:

For example, one of the biggest pains with the Pligg has always been the category manager. Adding categories was simple enough but it required a full page reload after you added a category, this is not an efficient method and a pain. Sub-categories were always the major problem, again a full page reload to add it, then dragging it usually twice and dropping it over the parent category, again a full page reload each time. Pligg needs to tap into existing resources within the CMS and make this section ajaxed and create a better manager like SWCMS has.

Spam:

Another feature that everyone has asked for, is reCaptcha during the submit process. We released a module for this but Pligg should have included this in the v1.0 release as it is a core function that is critical for running a successful Pligg install. Why this wasn’t added is beyond me, as all major social networking websites, Digg, Mixx etc…, use it to control the spam submissions by bots.

Killspam:

Another feature I would have liked to see was a better way to ban problem users. The current system is a joke and this is made evident by users having multiple logins. A better way to ban users would be via IP, not username or email address as is the case now. Pligg only had to look to their forum powered by VB, it bans users via their IP address.

Groups:

A major addition to this release is the “Groups” feature. While it is a neat feature, it’s not one that I was dying to have as I don’t think most Pligg installs will require it or will have enough people to utilize this to the point that it was worth all the time and effort to create. But, a great job implementing it and it’s still nice to have the option available.

Luckily they have included an easy way to disable the “Groups” feature via the admin panel.

god:

Finally, god is not the default username. Quite possibly the worst username they could have picked, is now no longer. A neat feature during the install is you cann pick the admin username.

Control panel:

The biggest addition in my opinion is the control panel. It has taken on a major transformation and is the highlight of this release.

Page management:

There is finally an option to create and manage pages withing the control panel, pages like Terms, Tools etc… this was a much asked for feature.

Default template:

Goodbye yget and hello Wistie. Another ridiculous theme name, yget, has been tossed aside for a much better look. Wistie is a clean design and provides a better framework for customizing it to fit your needs easier.

Advanced search:

They have included an advanced search feature, well not really. It’s called an advanced search but it’s pretty well the same old search function. Why can’t we see a search option for users to search a URL? Now that’s an advanced search option. Would it not be nice to display how many submissions a certain website/blog has submitted, I think this would be a nice addition, not critical but nice. Don’t call it an advanced search when it clearly isn’t complete.

Conclusion, v10. is on the right track, but, after all this time and after all the additions posted by members in the forums, this release is a major let down. There isn’t much to get excited about.

What do you think of the new version? Was there anything you were hoping to see?

Be sure to check out a review by my good friend Lincoln over at Social CMS Buzz.

First came Porn Sifter, which I reviewed here, now comes, Hot Aphrodite. Its a totally revamped and modded Pligg install and unless you know before hand, you wouldn’t know that it was built on the Pligg platform.

Gallery Images:

One impressive feature is it automatically fetches an image from the URL submitted. It then resizes the image and it is placed in a gallery that forms the popular and upcoming pages. The description of the gallery you are submitting is displayed on the comment page for the gallery.

Here’s a sample of what a submitted link looks like on the popular/upcoming pages, it’s the safest one to display here:

General:

With dozens of categories and thousands of submitted galleries, there is sure to be something for everyone.

This is one of the best adult Digg-like sites I have come across and definitely recommend you take a look. Adult webmasters can use this site for a source of traffic.

If you submit any galleries, the tag and submission fields are optional fields, all that matters is the link to the gallery.

Edit Submissions:

Any gallery you submit can be edited by simply hovering over the thumbnail and clicking on the edit link, this is a very professional touch, on your profile page you will not find a list of galleries submitted, but rather a thumbshot of each gallery submitted, this makes it easier to find the one you are looking for.

Easy Submission:

You can easily submit a new gallery by entering the URL in the form at the top of every page:

Videos:

Looking to submit videos or find videos? You can do that as well.

Video submissions are conveniently indicated with the traditional “play” button in the top left hand corner.

From the fantastic layout and functionality to the immense amount of content, this site gets a 10/10 from me.

WARNING: Hot Aphrodite is intended for audiences 18+ only.

I am on the prowl for a decent all in one video conversion software package. I want to be able to do the following with it:

convert videos to mpg format

allow for editing of videos

video compression

video capture (a must)

grab image from video

I was able to find one that can do all of this over at Blaze Media Pro, it has the above feature plus some additional ones like.

The one format I forgot about was .flv, which would probably be best for use on the internet. It video converter does support .flv luckily.

Converter Screenshot:

It also comes with a video encoder not sure whether I would need this or not. I am going to be posting the videos online, so if anyone knows whether that is important or not, let me know.

Check out their screenshot page for software previews, it has a plain interface, but appears to be a good find.

I would love your comments, impressions and suggestions on other software that would fit the bill.

Is it just me or are we seeing more blog reviews about Cuil.com then anything else right now? After about 12 different blogs I had visited were talking about it, I decided I would visit Cuil.com and see what the raving was about.

After visiting Cuil.com, I still don’t see what people are so impressed with. There are so many things wrong with this new “search engine”, not my words theirs, that I had to do my own post.

Firstly, Cuil is pronounced “cool”, so I am told.

I personally dislike the columns of results per page, looks horrible and disorganized. They grab images from the respectie website and post it next to their title/description, not sure how they determine what image to place though.

I tried a search for Pliggs.com, it returned 149 results, the results mentioned Pliggs.com, but no where in the 149 results was one for this blog.

Other blogs have mentioned searches for famous people who have returned images of different people so I won’t even go into those.

Very disappointing that they put all this work into publicizing it and getting every blogger talking about it, that they forgot to actually finish their search engine and actually get a decent crawl done. Their crawlers name is Twiceler, whatever.

They claim to have indexed 120 billion pages so far, of which I’m guessing a fair number haven’t been indexed properly.

Thumbs down from me, for lack of decent serps, images that don’t match, 3 colum layout (ugh!), horrible for 2 ex Google employees, maybe theres a reason they are no longer with Google.

My latest review of a Pligg powered website is Bharat Boom, niched installed which caters to Indian news.

Design (7/10): the design is definitely not your typical Pligg layout, its a 3 column layout, rounded corners, and a black background. I am not a fan of black backgrounds as this can make reading hard on the eyes (for me at least). Also, the site is extremely montized, perhaps over monetized.

There are far too many ads for my preference, I can live with the number of ads, but one thing i cannot live with is the popup ads and the full page ad that covers the content, these are definite turn-offs not only for me but for most people.

The ad in the header either partially hides behind the categories, or in some instances partially covered the categories, looks like an adjustment of the top margin will fix easily.

The ad in the footer is also out of alignment.

The use of inline text ads on this site are also extremely annoying as quite a few of the navigation buttons are turned into ads when you go to click on them:

Another ad that drives a lot of people crazy including me is the ad that appears on the “Live” page, its an auto play video ad, again a no-no for most people.

Content (9/10): there is no shortage of content, all of the content I scanned over related with the niche.

Navigation (7/10): no issues with the navigation either. I like the “User Menu” being placed in the sidebar. The use on inline text ads causes ads to appear when mousing over some navigation links.

Errors (7/10): there were no errors that impeded me from this website, aside from the ad errors listed above, the only other errors were the 250+ errors found by W3C which I would work on reducing.

Overall (7.5/10): I think this site has great content and appears to have a good member base, therefore, it could be very successful. However, the abundance of ads being used and the method in which some appear will definitely turn some people off, me included.

Once the issue with the ads is addressed, I would be happy to do a follow-up review.

The opinions expressed in this review are strictly that, opinions, they by no means are meant to discourage the owner but to hopefully point out things in a different view in the hopes of making the website that much better.

If you would like your Pligg install reviewed, drop me a comment here…
