Limiting submissions – good or bad?

As previously stated by myself and many others, Pligg can be a major SPAM magnet if you let it become one. There are ways however to combat this, namely reCaptcha.

There is a module that Pligg has that enables the Administrator to limit the number of submissions a person can do in a 24 hour period.

While this may eliminate or reduce spam, this has to be the most idiotic thing to use on your site I have ever seen.

This basically penalizes all of your members because of spammers and because you are too lazy to deal with spam and have failed to adopt measures to reduce spam.

Imagine a member who has submitted 2 stories trying to submit a 3rd and then being greeted with this:

congratulations, you just lost a valued member!

Do you honestly think a member will stick around or come back while being placed under these restrictions?  If you do, you have no business running a website.  This has to be the biggest slap in the face for your members I can think of.

While the logic may have some weight here, the use of it doesn’t.

I can imagine Digg or Mixx doing this, they would never hear the end of it.  Folks at TechCrunch would eat them alive and rightfully so.

Don’t penalize your members because your are getting spammed and have taken no steps to eliminate or reduce it yourself.  Don’t be a lazy Pligg install owner and try to take an easy way out.

Would you be a dedicated member of a site that placed such limitations on you just for trying to help the site out by supporting it?  It’s a 2 way street, if you want members to submit and support you, you need to make it easier for them to submit not harder, this backward thinking and I wish anyone who uses it luck as I will not support any site using it.

And more importantly, don’t penalize valued members because of spammers, because if you do all you will have is a site of no submissions or submissions that you are submitting and then I wonder if you would agree with me on this one.

I would love to hear your thoughts and your arguments for actually using this ultimate piece of junk on your site.

    We are developing sites that are more “store” type shopping sites. Using pligg is helping us combine news and product feeds. These are not typical community sites so the user submitted data will be limited. One spin on this that we made was to create the admin/god only submission module which still allows your top users to submit as much as they want. It’s fair to say that not everyone will have the same intentions with their pligg site.

    @Denny Sugar, good point, perhaps properly setup it may be better, but I still feel limiting your users to X number of submissions per day will be a deterent quality submissions and the user will go elsewhere.

    These days, websites are encouraged and are moving to steps to make things easier for the user not harder, while this mod does the opposite.

    Yeah, it will stop spammers but if I came across that I would be very frustrated. Maybe I was having a good day and wanted to submit more than 2 links. They could possibly change it to a weekly submission limit like 25 a week or something?

    I don’t even see how it will stop spammers, the spam bots will still be able to submit links.

    This module only punishes the legit user.

    The only way to prevent spam bots from submitting links is to use reCaptcha on the submission process, period.

    I don’t know what else to do! I’m not lazy but it’s just too stressful! If my users don’t understand then I don’t want them!

    Also it’s a great way to make users be active! If they vote roe they can submit more!

    Also FYI it does stop spam!

    Instead of having 20 spam submissions I only have 1

    I would rather lose a few members then deal with the spam!

    @Bbrian, you would be the exception to this post as I know you have had issues with getting the reCaptcha working, so, don’t take this post personally.

    I still feel though that using this module is backward thinking, thats just my opinion.

    Nothing personal Geo but when I think about all the spam I have to deal with I start getting very pissed off! I cannot believe how many East Indians Spam. it’s like they have a tele-marketing company just for spamming.

    Sometimes I just can’t take it and it’s over whelming!

    I do agree that spamming have grown like monsters everywhere. We should control them but by using good strategies. sometimes we too make mistake in understanding opposite ppl and the condition goes worst :(

    Yes, It’s good for prevent spamming. Some are avoid these types of directories and use other site more submissions.

    IMO limiting submissions is good. It’s good way to prevent spamming. I like this types of directories.

    The best way to control spam is just to check comments b4 they go live, most good sites have a dedicated and loving owner who will take the time to view all comments before making them live…. simplesss
