SMS – the new threat to our society?

Remember the days when people would actually talk to one another using their voice and a vocabulary? With the advent of the internet, came endless possibilities and advancements. The last 10 years on the internet has dramatically changed its look, usefulness and awe-like functionality.

But with all that good stuff one cannot overlook the one of the biggest downfalls of this great system, communication. Communication? Some of you maybe saying people communicate more now than ever, I say the world of acronyms will be a serious problem in the future.

From Wikipedia:

In the third quarter of 2006, at least 10 billion text messages crossed AT&T’s network, up almost 15 percent from the preceding quarter.

Text messaging has a language all its own, and in the beginning this was a good idea, but now it has become almost like a first language for our youth. But not only is it hurting the grammar, and writing skills in our youth, now mainstream media is using it to promote their products/services.

AT&T:
idk my bff rose

In a society where our youth are already struggling to keep up in school and getting high enough grades to make it to college, this is just another example of something that is hurting them and now even adults as well.

I wonder how many arguments have been started because someone has misread a text message, because you can’t hear the person saying it, you don’t know what tone is being used. I bet quite a few.

How often do you text message, do you think it will have a negative impact in the future? Leave me a comment below.
