SPAM List

What’s the biggest annoyance with running a Pligg install? Dealing with SPAM. This is unique to Pligg, but because of the type of site that Pligg enables you to run, SPAMMERS love to abuse it.

Most SPAM is submitted via a script, therefore, making it super easy for SPAMMERS to riddle every Pligg install they find with their garbage. If you are like me, I spend about 3 hours a day removing SPAM from FAQPAL, that’s time I would rather spend doing almost anything else.

I have compiled a list of 1787 domain names that have been blacklisted for SPAM.

Many new Pligg owners aren’t aware that Pligg has a feature built in where you can have the script check the domain being domain to see if it has been blacklisted, if it has been, the submitter won’t be able to complete the submission.

All Pligg site should be using this feature.

To enable:

Admin – Configure – Anti-spam – Enable spam checking (set this to true)

The file that lists all sites you blacklist is located in the root folder of your Pligg install and is called local-antispam.txt.

To add a site to the list, you can manually open the file and add the URL or you can have it added by clicking the ban link in the story admin panel.

To get you started, here is the list of sites I have compiled.

  • You Describe very well with help of example for spam, it's a negative face of any activity
  • You may also try using filters in your email program to block such things. I usually have mine sent to the JUNK folder and delete them from there. If you sign up for a lot of offers and such, using a free email service like hot mail can catch most of the junk.
  • I wish you good luck in this war. You may also try using filters in your email program to block such things. I usually have mine sent to the JUNK folder and delete them from there. If you sign up for a lot of offers and such, using a free email service like hotmail can catch most of the junk.
  • Something I'd like to experiment with is using SpamBayes to filter comments. Taking it further, the same technique might be useful for automatic filtering spam and graffiti from wiki's.
  • is this list in text (.txt) format so that we can import it ?
because when ive tried importing files before, it just either doesnt see them, or it sees them, but doesnt recognise the file type, and if they are .txt, are they 1 url per line ?
  • @wedding I don't think there is a way, you can just ignore the person that is spamming you..
  • Is there any way to remove this person from the Yahoo Messenger spam list or dump my entire spam list. They don't show up on my Ignore List but I can no longer receive messages from them. They still receive my messages.

Ok I know something about the programmes that spam Pligg. Firstly they generate email addresses randomly and have the ability to log into the account they make and confirm the link. Blacklisting email addresses is never going to work.
Blacklisting the domain is next to usless there are so many of them its a never ending job that will eventually bring your site to a crawl.

So what is the answer, have a question and answer that is related to your site (not 1+1=) Captcha is usless and can be cracked for less than 2 cents, see decaptcha dot com. Also Pligg needs to have at least 2 anti spam defenses one as I already mentioned and some type of auto generated code that has to be copied and pasted from one box to another.

But here is the best tip Ban blocks of IPs like ban all of India and China as that is where most of the spammers come from, have a look in your logs see where you are being spammed from and ban the whole block of IPs through Cpanel.
  • If you still have the email then display it and then click Not Spam button. If you do not have then have them send another email. It will go to your Bulk or Spam folder. Display it and then click Not Spam. It might take a few time for the server to learn it is not spam.
  • good comment.
